start building your spitfire!

Use these instructions in conjunction with the spitfire building gallery (on the page named Spitfire Instructions)


1. Mark two wing panels onto 6.5mm (1/4'') balsa using carbon paper and cut out with a sharp modelling knife.

2. Cut wing brace and bellcrank mount from ply in similar manner.

3. Chamfer wing root to an approximate dihedral angle and assemble wing as diagram A using two pack adhesive (araldite rapid ect.) to give strong joints

4. Cut out one fuselage panel from 9.5 mm (3/8'') balsa. And two from 0.8 mm (1/32) ply.

5. Glue the ply panels to both sides of the fuselage panel using Aliphatic Resin glue (Titebond) to form a very strong balsa and ply sandwich.

6. Cut out tailplane, elevator and rudder out of from 3.2 mm (1/8) hard balsa. Sand edges with 100 grit coarse abrasive paper.

7. Attach elevator to tailplane using cloth (cotton shirt) hinges, see drawing B and C

8. Fit Cox engine/ fuel tank using self tapping servo mount screws.

9. cut out engine mounting from 9.5mm (3/8") ply using a 41 mm(1 5/8'') holesaw

10. enlarge centre hole to 10 mm's and then saw a vertical slot to allow a Cox sure start engines to fit snugly in place

11. Glue engine mounting to front of fuselage using two pack adhesive and reinforce both sides of the fuselage with scrap balsa (or ¼'' x 1'' trailing edge).

12. shape wing to airfoil profile using 100 grit abrasive paper

13. fit bellcrank to its mounting plate in centre of wing using 3mm (5BA) countersunk bolt, a drop of ''locktite'' to prevent the lock nuts from loosening, check that the bellcrank has free movement.

14. Slide wing into fuselage and glue with two pack adhesive and check alignment with fuselage.

15. Glue tailplane and rudder (note offset) to fuselage and check alignment with fuselage.

16.  Bend pushrods to shape from 18SWG piano wire

17. Attach pushrod to bellcrank then fit elevator horn to pushrod. And finally glue horn to elevator with two-pack glue checking that both elevator and bellcrank are in the central position

18. Cut out lead-out guide from 1.6mm (1/16) ply

19. Bend lead outs to shape from 20 SWG piano wire. Pass lead outs through guide (18) and attach to bellcrank. Then glue guide to port wing panel.

20. Cut out elevator horn and bellcrank from thin aluminium sheet (or a small commercially available alternative).

21. Sand complete model with 360 grit abrasive paper. Apply one coat of clear dope, lightly sand followed by coloured paint, and finally a good coat of two pack fuel proofer (tuf cote) noting that paints are very heavy and should be used sparingly.
